Discharge printing removes dye instead of adding ink, and it changes everything about how a print feels and lasts. Here's what it is, why printers reach for it, the difference between standard and fluorescent discharge inks, and how to mix and use it without wasting a print run.
| WHAT IT IS | Removing Dye Instead of Adding Ink |
Discharge screen printing is a specialized method used in textile and apparel printing. Unlike traditional screen printing, which lays ink on top of the fabric, discharge printing removes or "discharges" the dye from the fabric to create the design. That's what gives discharge prints their soft, breathable feel instead of the heavier hand of a standard print.
The process runs on water-based ink plus a discharge activator mixed in before you print. Screen Print Direct carries both standard water-based discharge ink and fluorescent discharge colors.

Watch Out Discharge only works on high-cotton-content fabrics. It reacts with the fiber-reactive dyes used on cotton, not the disperse dyes used on most polyester. Run it on a poly-blend and you'll get a weak, patchy result at best, no discharge at all at worst. Check fiber content before you commit to a discharge job. | WHY IT'S WORTH IT | Six Reasons Printers Reach for Discharge |
Softer feel. No thick ink layer sitting on top of the fabric, especially noticeable on multi-color prints.
No additional layers. The design becomes part of the fabric instead of stacking on top of it, so there's nothing built up to feel stiff.
Vintage, faded look. The slightly muted result is hard to fake with standard ink, and it's exactly what retro and distressed designs call for.
Better color matching on dark garments. Discharge removes the original color before replacing it, so you skip the white base layer that standard printing needs on darks, and skip the color-accuracy problems that base layer causes.
Longer-lasting prints. Because the design is part of the fabric instead of sitting on it, it's less likely to crack, peel, or fade with wash and wear.
Fine detail. Discharge holds up well on intricate designs and small details.

Both Ecotex® water-based inks can be used straight from the container or activate with discharge powder, but they're not interchangeable.

| HOW-TO | Mixing Your Discharge Activator |
1. Add 3–5% discharge activator to your ink by weight. For 8oz of ink, that's roughly 0.24–0.40oz (6.8–11.4g) of activator.
2. Mix thoroughly. No visible chunks or grains, powder needs to be fully worked in.
3. Only mix what you'll use for that run. Once activated, the ink has roughly an 8-hour working life.
4. Print. The color will look muted right off the screen, that's normal. It comes to full color when cured.
Light garment? Use the water-based ink straight, no activator needed. Dark garment? Mix in the activator so it bleaches the shirt back toward its original color while dyeing in the ink color you chose.

Pro Tip Discharge results depend on the specific dye lot of the garment, not just the fabric type. Two "black" shirts from different brands can discharge to two different shades. Always print a test swatch on the actual shirts you're running before you commit to the full order. |
| SETUP | Screen and Cure Basics |
Discharge ink runs thinner than standard plastisol, so most printers go with a lower mesh count screen to let more ink through. 155-305 mesh count range is recommended for moderate to fine detail. For bold, solid-coverage designs, drop lower, closer to 110-155, so there's enough ink volume for the discharge reaction to fully react with the fabric.
Cure temperature and dwell time matter more with discharge than with plastisol, since the discharge reaction itself needs heat to finish. Curing should be a minimum of 90 seconds at 320°F. For the best results 2-3 minutes at 320°F.

| MISTAKES | Four Ways to Waste a Discharge Run |
Mixing more than you'll use. Activated ink is good for about 8 hours. Past that, you're printing with dead ink and won't know it until it's cured.
Skipping the swatch test. Every dye lot discharges a little differently. Test first, especially on a new garment brand or color.
Running it on the wrong fabric. Poly-blends won't discharge properly. Confirm fiber content before you quote the job.
Under-curing. The color looks muted off the press for a reason, it needs heat to finish reacting. Don't judge the final color before it's cured.

Can I discharge print on polyester?
Not reliably. Discharge needs fiber-reactive dye to work with, which is a cotton thing, not a poly thing. Stick to 100% cotton or high-cotton blends.
Do I need discharge activator on white shirts?
No. On light garments, print the water-based ink straight from the container.
How long does activated discharge ink last?
Roughly 8 hours once mixed. Only activate what you'll use for that run.
Why does my print look faded right off the press?
That's normal. Discharge color develops during curing, not before. Judge the color after it's cured, not off the screen.
